How To Work From Home On The Computer

Do you wish that you could work from home on the computer?  If you know how to use a graphics program, a word processing program or spreadsheet software, there are more opportunities than you think.  But the first question is: do you want a work at home job or do you want your own business?

If you want a job work from home on the computer, forget about all of the online ads offering work-at-home typing jobs and similar kinds of positions.  Most of those are scams.  Most work at home jobs are the result of your relationship with an employer, and they often start out with you working in the office.  After you have learned enough about the job, and proved that you can be trusted, many employers will consider allowing an employee to work from home.  But it has to be the kind of job that can be done with a lot of autonomy.  For example, a job where you are training new personnel on the computer system would probably require that you spend time in the office so that you are accessible to your trainees.  But if you work independently on projects and it doesn’t matter where you do the work, you’re a good candidate for a work at home job.

If you are willing to work as an independent contractor, you have a lot more options.  The trend in today’s business world is toward outsourcing instead of maintaining a large staff of employees.  So businesses worldwide are now going online to higher skilled workers on a project by project basis.  There are several well-established freelance sites where you can bid on jobs that companies post.  You could easily work from home on the computer doing graphic design, data entry, transcription, word processing, research, software coding and other clerical and skilled professional work.

Depending on your skills, you could be sitting in your home office in Omaha or Brisbane, and working on a project for a company headquartered in London or Singapore.  But you have to be willing to spend the time to find and bid on the work.  This requires a different mindset than being an employee where you are paid even if there’s no work at the moment.  True, as an employee, the company will always try to find things to keep you busy.  But as an independent contractor, if you don’t go out and find your own jobs, you don’t get paid.

But either way, as an employee or as an independent contractor, if you have good computer skills you can find a way to work from home on the computer.  As an employee, you find a boss that’s willing to let you do it.  As an independent contractor, you just do it.
