The opportunities for the woman who wants to be a work from home mom are numerous these days. This is an exciting time for women. Being a breadwinner and a mother no longer has to mean making sacrifices that can leave you feeling torn. Many mothers are interested in working from home, but have no idea what to do or where to begin. It helps to have a guideline; a checklist that helps you outline a plan and give substance to your interest.
1. List your strengths
Take stock of your talents, interests, and areas of expertise. Write them down on a piece of paper. Don’t sell yourself short; list as many things as you can think of even if you think some are marginal. Nobody but you is going to be working with this list.
2. Identify opportunities
Make a sub-list under each entry on your first list and write down how each of your strengths could possibly fill a need for others. Again, don’t hold back or second-guess yourself. If you think of something, write it down. In fact, write down everything that comes to your mind even if it seems silly at first. Now is not the time to edit. You want to consider every possibility for being a work from home mom.
3. List your qualifications
Put down what you do if you are currently working outside the home, and then some other types of jobs that you would possibly qualify for. If you are not currently working, list jobs that you would apply for if you were looking. At first this may not seem like something you should do if you are interested in being a work from home mom, but it helps to know what you believe you could bring to a job.
Making a list of your strengths and the needs they could fill for others can help you consider what kind of business you could possibly run from your home. The other list of jobs can help you know what types of telecommuting jobs for which you may qualify. Of course, these lists can overlap each other. You could apply for a telecommuting job based on a strength or interest, or build a home business based on what you do now for work. Once you have finished your lists, you will have a better idea of your best possibilities for becoming a work from home mom.
