If you are thinking about ways to earn extra money, realize that earning money generally falls into three categories:
1. Offer a product (something you buy wholesale and resell or something you create yourself)
2. Offer a service (get paid for doing a task or providing a certain skill, either by the hour, by a flat rate, or on commission)
3. Invest or lend money (hoping that you will earn a return through interest).
Every legitimate way to earn money will fall into one of these three areas. When you are looking for ways to earn extra money it is very helpful to start out with a plan of how you can best go about it.
Would you prefer the security of a job provided by someone else? Does the idea of freelancing appeal to you – selling your time and skills to others around your own schedule but with less security of a consistent paycheck? Are you creative or talented – are there items you could manufacture and sell yourself? Would you like to run your own business and be your own boss?
If you would like the freedom of being in business with yourself, you will need to decide whether your business is going sell a product or provide a service. While it is true that many businesses do both, usually one of the two is the main priority and focus.
Once you have decided what the main product (physical or service) of your business will be, you will be better equipped to start and maintain a successful business. As your business grows and is profitable, you can then look for new avenues to branch out in to that will complement your established product.
As an example of ways to earn extra money, a dog groomer provides a service (grooming dogs), but she could also sell dog toys and dog accessories in her shop. The dog-related products result in extra income without too much effort. The groomer simply has to display the products in her shop and maybe recommend certain items when customers come to pick up their dogs and pay for her service.
A hardware store on the other hand mainly sells mainly products. However, they could offer a handyman service as a sideline, or earn a commission from service contractors that they recommend to their customers for specialized home projects.
When considering ways to earn extra money, the easiest method is usually to add a product or service to what you already do. Why spend time learning something new and wait for things to slowly payoff.
If you have a business, ask yourself what else your customers may be interested in related to your current product? If you have a job – think about what you can do that relates to your current job and skills that would help you earn some extra cash. If you are currently unemployed and do not have your own business, then the same ideas still apply. Think about ways to earn extra money that will fit with your interests, skills, and current schedule and get started.
Depending on your situation, earning extra money can be easy or challenging. You will be more successful if you bank on your current strengths rather than reinvent the wheel.
