Legitimate Alternatives to Envelope Stuffing Jobs

There are multiple ways to earn a living working from home, but stuffing envelopes is not on that list.  Unfortunately, due to the number of scams, it is often hard to decipher what is a legitimate business opportunity.  Envelope stuffing jobs are one of the oldest work from home scams, dating as far back as the 1920’s.  The promise of big money draws many people in, but that promise is never fulfilled.  There are however, opportunities that allow a person to make money working out of their house.  Freelance writing is a job that a person can easily do from home.

Writing is a wonderful way to earn an income.  A person that is good with words, enjoys research, and is motivated can make a very decent living by writing.  Unlike envelope stuffing jobs, you do not have to purchase information or a package of materials in order to start working.  As with any independent contractor job, there are things that you will need although these are things most people will already have access to; in that case, there would not be a cost involved.  A writer working from home should have access to a computer with internet, pens, notepads and some sort of word processing software.

Online content companies will hire writers that are just starting out.  These companies often pay per word.  A person would simply go to the content company’s website to fill out an application.  Some companies will require a writing sample on the topic of their choice, while other companies will accept an article sample that you have previously written.  The company will look over the sample to determine if you are a good fit for the type of content producer they are looking for.  If so, you will be asked to join their writing team.

At that time, you will be provided with topics, keywords or titles.  Your articles for these companies will often be between 250 and 800 words.  Pay is done on a flat fee or per word rate.  Some companies will give you a grade or score based on your writing skills.  As your skills get better, your pay rate will often increase.  As opposed to envelope stuffing jobs, a legitimate writing company will never ask you to pay money to see jobs or obtain work.

Once a writer has some experience, they may want to apply to a higher paying content company.  There are also many opportunities for writers to work with private clients, often writing articles for websites, newsletters or even providing resumes.  Another option for a freelance writer is to submit articles for print in the form of newspapers, magazines and other publications.  As a writer gains speed, skill and experience, she may decide to write an e-book or even a novel.  These types of projects pay much more than writing for content companies, but there is significant work involved.

Working from home is the dream of many people, and with good reason.  There is a lot of freedom in working independently.  With the right opportunity, there is also a lot of money to be made.  Envelope stuffing jobs, however, are not an opportunity in any sense of the word.  A little research will go a long way in helping you find the right work from home position.
