Business from Home: Work for Yourself

Thanks to the internet, more and more people have abandoned the 9-to-5 grind and are now doing business from home. Work at home opportunities are plentiful online and the specific situations they entail can vary depending on the person. Some people who work at home do so as employees who are directly employed by a company, including all the rights of being an employee and any protections provided by the company. However, the majority of people who work from home do so as independent contractors who have their own business and are not considered employees. Listed here are some of the more popular work from home business opportunities.

Direct Sales

Many people find direct sales the quickest way to start a business from home. Work from these types of opportunities are often appealing to people previously engaged in sales jobs as direct sales requires choosing a company to buy items to resell. Melaleuca, PartyLite Candles and Herbal Life are just a few of these types of companies. When someone is in direct sales, this often means selling online, selling items from catalogs or selling items at sales parties. The part of direct sales that many people dislike is that the salesperson generally has to buy the items before they have sold anything. There are often fees for signing up and there may be training fees due as well.

Affiliate Marketing

Working from home may also involve selling things that you may never even see. Affiliate marketing is a fast-growing business from home work opportunity. When you sign up with a company as an affiliate, you market their products and then earn commission from any sales that you make. Most affiliates sign up for many affiliate programs, often dozens of them in order to have more income streams. Along with affiliate sales, affiliate marketers may also have one or more of their own products that they also sell online. These products may include reports, an informational ebook or a piece of software that they have the rights to sell. When you have your own product, you can sign up affiliates to help sell it for you.

Third-Party Sales

Another popular method of working from home is selling items through a third-party site. This means that you don’t own your own website, but use someone else’s site to sell your own items. Amazon.com and eBay are popular third-party websites that make this possible. When a seller lists an item on one of these sites, they have the benefit of the traffic the site brings in. This means far more sales than a brand-new site that has to build up traffic. The downside is that the third-party site takes a commission percentage. Many sellers need to sell items with a large profit margin and at a high volume in order to make a profit through these sites. To do this requires finding a reliable method of getting inventory that will sell for a fair price. It may sound difficult, but thousands of sellers do it every day and earn their incomes selling their items through these sites. They find items from distributors, yard sales, estate auctions and anywhere else they can find inexpensive items.

These are some of the more common business from home work options. Your own success will require finding the best fit with your own skills and situation.
